| THE VORTEX OPENED IN DALSTON ON MAY 19th 2005 BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP Negotiations for the club to move from its premises in Stoke Newington Church Street to a planned new building in Gillett Square, Dalston (map) have now been completed with Hackney Co-operative Developments. The move took place in May 2005. The new building, the Dalston Culture
House, is to be part of a
new 'town square' which has been endorsed by London's Mayor Ken Livingstone and
world renowned architect Richard
Rogers. With plans afoot to demolish the Vortex's home in Stoke Newington, it is extremely fortuitous and an incredible opportunity for the club to make this move. The benefits are immense, for example:
The Vortex now occupies the ground and first floors of the building. A café/restaurant is planned for the ground floor, leaving the first floor free for daytime and evening music programming. The move to Dalston means the Vortex will continue as a world class jazz venue and also enable it to play a key role in the development of jazz in the 21st century. Sir Elton John, Griff Rhys Jones, Mike Figgis and Stewart Lee all support this campaign. The Vortex is now working hard on a fundraising campaign for this venue. TARGET £300,000
The Vortex's agreement with Hackney Co-operative Developments specified that the Vortex had to pay for the fit out of that part of the building the club occupies. The fit out list included air conditioning, an acoustic ceiling, sound and lighting equipment, a performance stage, a catering kitchen, a bar plus other important stuff that is fitted into the fabric of the building to enable the club to function such as sound proofing and ducting. We also needed to furnish it, so that you can sit down to listen in comfort. This totalled £300,000. The money to pay for the absolute essentials was raised through a loan which the club now has to repay. In addition it still has to fit out a kitchen and restaurant/cafe on the ground floor WHAT YOU CAN DO For as little as £100 you can have your name displayed in this world-famous club and play your part in the continuation and development of British jazz.
