THE VORTEX OPENED IN DALSTON ON MAY 19th 2005

 BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP

Negotiations for the club to move from its premises in Stoke Newington Church Street to a planned new building in Gillett Square, Dalston (map) have now been completed  with Hackney Co-operative Developments.  The move took place in May 2005.

The new building, the Dalston Culture House, is to be part of a new 'town square' which has been endorsed by London's Mayor Ken Livingstone and world renowned architect Richard Rogers.
The Vortex will be the heart of the scheme to improve one of the most culturally diverse and intriguing areas of London.

With plans afoot to demolish the Vortex's home in Stoke Newington, it is extremely fortuitous and an incredible opportunity for the club to make this move.  The benefits are immense, for example:

a secure future for the club with a long lease (20 years) in a new building

a more flexible space over two floors

greatly improved facilities for musicians and audiences including disabled access

a location (also N16) close to the current venue providing a continuous link with the local community

better public transport making it more accessible

the means to facilitate a jazz education programme with the Vortex Jazz Foundation

The Vortex now occupies the ground and first floors of the building. A café/restaurant is planned for the ground floor, leaving the first floor free for daytime and evening music programming.

The move to Dalston means the Vortex will continue as a world class jazz venue and also enable it to play a key role in the development of jazz in the 21st century. Sir Elton John, Griff Rhys Jones, Mike Figgis and Stewart Lee all support this campaign.

The Vortex is now working hard on a fundraising campaign for this venue.

FUNDRAISING PROGRAMME

TARGET £300,000

The Vortex's agreement with Hackney Co-operative Developments specified that the Vortex had to pay for the fit out of that part of the building the club occupies. The fit out list included air conditioning, an acoustic ceiling, sound and lighting equipment, a performance stage, a catering kitchen, a bar plus other important stuff that is fitted into the fabric of the building to enable the club to function such as sound proofing and ducting. We also needed to furnish it, so that you can sit down to listen in comfort. This totalled £300,000.  The money to pay for the absolute essentials was raised through a loan which the club now has to repay. In addition it still has to fit out a kitchen and restaurant/cafe on the ground floor
